22ed Century Technology Is Officially Closing.

22 Tech Is Officially Closing.
And So is Upbeatpc.com (Failed website attempt that we never really worked on).
This closure is due to Spam (Comments), and loss of interest in the blog.

Really, the full story is, We thought ," Lets ditch the blog and make a full blown website". We started out nicely, But then just stopped working on the website. (We never even finished the design, whats on there now was kind-of a "test"). Feel free to browse the Blog and site for past articles. Although the site will likely be shut down, the blog will stay up freely for anyone to browse.

Memory Usage - IE8 beta 1 vs Firefox vs Opera

Recently, Firefox got an update to the newest version 3.0. Before, many people were complaining about how much memory firefox uses whenever you use it. It could go up to 600MB if you used it long enough!

But now, with the release of firefox version 3, Mozilla has promised to fix over 300 memory leaks. Memory leaks occur when the browser fails to dispatch memory that it has already used, (happens especially, though not always, when you go to a lot of sites in the same tab).

These are the version numbers of the browsers we used -

Firefox 3
Opera 9.5
IE8 beta 1

This is how I tested -
We went to the nba channel on youtube, and played all of the videos in the playlist "There Can Only be One" in high quality (if available). After a couple seconds after they all played, we went to Windows Task manager to see which one consumed the least amount of memory.

Here are the results -

Firefox 3 - 53092 kb
Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 - 59701 kb
Opera 9.5 - 85832 kb

So, Firefox did the best out of the bunch, but it wasn't much better than Internet Explorer, and Opera used up the most memory, a whopping 86 megabytes Unfortunately, we did not test IE7. A graph showing the results is on the right.

Howto: Wine with Linux

How To: Run Your Windows Applications in Linux.

So you want to run your Windows applications on Ubuntu but don't know where to start? This guide explains step-by-step instructions on how to do it in a really simple way. Just follow step-by step.

Although there are numerous programs that can do this job – the most common way to do it is to use Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator), and that is what we will use here.

To set up Wine all you need is -

A working 32-bit Linux OS installed to your hard drive (or through a VM) *You can do 64-bit but these instructions are for 32-bit only
An Internet Connection (or someone who does)
A little bit of common sense and patience

First of all we have to get Wine. To do this all you have to do is run the shell script that I made which will automatically put the wine repository in your list, update apt, and install wine.

First of all download the script from here.
Go to the folder in which you downloaded the script, and right click and go to properties.
Go to the “Permissions” tab.
Check “Allow Executing file as a program”
After that, double click on the executable and say “Run in Terminal”
The script will install wine and close, once it is done wine is installed! Simple right?

Next all we have to do is install an application. We all don't have the same applications – so as an example I am going to use Notepad++. It is a text editor more advanced than notepad (for programming) and it works wonderfully in Wine. You can download it here. (If you download yourself, use version 4.8.5 , the 5.0 beta does not work). Once it is done, go to the folder in which you

downloaded it, right click it and there should be an option saying - “Open with Wine Windows Emulator”. If that doesn't show up, you will have to take some extra steps. Go to “Open With Other Application”. Use a custom command – and put in “wine” (without quotes).

When you open the notepad++ installer, the installation screen should show up asking you which language to pick (Illustration 1). Then you can just go through the installation process as you normally would as if you were in Windows.

Afterwards, you would get an icon on your desktop that says, “Notepad++” . You would also get it in the menu (after it refreshes). (If it asks you to update, say no). Double-click it and there you go. You are running notepad++ in wine!

Not all software is that easy, but then again, some are. If you need help installing a particular program, you can google it, or search the Wine Application Database. This is a database which has a list of programs which work or do not work with Wine.

Also, if you are willing to pay, there are some proprietary wine solutions out there.

CodeWeavers CrossoverOffice This is a wine derivative and makes it very easy to install windows applications through its interface, I recommend to try the beta and see if you are willing to pay $40 for it.

CodeWeavers CrossoverGames This is like CrossoverOffice except it is meant for games.
Cedega – This is another application that helps you play your games on Linux. I cannot say anything about CrossoverGames vs Cedega (since I haven't tried them). The only thing I know is that Cedega is cheaper than Crossover Games.

The dream PC.

So now we're gonna do a post about the "Dream Computer". Of course, this is nothing CLOSE to practical or anything ... its just if we had unlimited $$, what is the best performing computer we could get?? The final price is outrageous - $27K. Atcually, we made 2 PCs, one is not as crazy as the other (a good 3K less).. we'll refer to the $27K one as PC 1 and the $24K one as PC 2.

CPU
Obviously intel is on top, for the really all out pc, we chose 2 intel qx9775's , giving us 8 cores of goodness. As for the not so crazy one, we just went with one intel qx9770, still intel's second most powerful quad.

Motherboard - For the all out one , we had to choose intel's only skulltrail motherboard, which unfortunately is more like a server board, it only supports PCIE x16 1.1 (not v2) , and it is only ddr2 800/677 FBDIMM. But it has support for 2 CPUs and it has 4 pcie x16 slots, and it supports upto 16gb of RAM. As for the not so all-out one , we chose the asus striker extreme 790i motherboard, which has support for all the new tech, but is not a skulltrail platform. Well , at least that was the original plan. On newegg, afterwards we saw a 4gb module of ddr2 800! So we were like wow, we can put in 16 gig! Problem - it was ddr2 , and 790i only supports ddr3 , so we had a choice, stick with 8gb of ddr3 or go with 16gb of ddr2, now , that is your choice, but we went with the 16 gig, but now i kinda regret it because of course - ddr3 is more future proof and all that, but in the future I guess we will see 4gb modules for ddr3. Hopefully. Also, we needed memory for the raid card (it had a ddr2 slot) but we will tell you about that in that section.

RAM-
For the all out one - I chose 16gb of ddr2 667 fbdimms, 4x4gb .. they are only 667 but 16 gig .. wow. Obviously most people would like to go with 8gb of ddr2 800, but that's what PC 2 is for ;). For PC 2 we picked 8gb (2x 2x2gb) of ddr3 1600 RAM. In addition, we could probably OC that to ddr2 1800-1900 etc.

Video Cards-
For PC one, we picked four, yes four, 9800GX2s ... why? I don't know. Bragging rights??? But seriously , that is why this is the all out pc, four 9800gx2s it is, maybe they won't be in SLI, but who knows? lol. For PC 2, we obviously didn't do that, we just went with "normal" sliied 2 9800gx2s for quad sli. Oh and of course, these aren't just any 9800gx2s, they are the evga ssc ones, so they are OC'ed to teh MAX!!

Power Supply - We picked the same power supply for 2 PCs, and it is the silverstone 1200w. We needed this power supply because it has a BUNCH of pcie pwr cables (6x 6pin and 2x 8pin) , but since in PC I we have four 9800gx2s, we would also need to snag 2 PC power and cooling cables that convert a 6pin power plug to an 8pin so that we need enough power. Those are about $10 each. For PC 2, we picked the same power supply, although we could've used something a bit less than 1200W (Maybe 750w or something).

Hard drives -
This is where half the cost of both PCs go. Yes. Hard drives. Why? We picked 4, yes, 4 SSD hard drives that are 128gb each all in RAID 0! Think how much speed that would give! And for backup and large files, we picked 2 1TB Segate hard drives. Of course, many people would
disagree and say for one - 4 ssd 128 gb's cost $12000, and you could just at the very least get three of them and get 3 1tb hard drives in raid 5. I don't know, that is another good option so you can put a lot of variety into this, but that is what we decided to go for! Of course, for this kind of raid you think we are going to use onboard raid?? Heck no! We chose a $1200 raid card from areca on newegg. It also benefits from having a ddr2 533 slot where we can put in 1 stick of memory for RAM. As for that the 4gb module was just perfect for that, so we can have 4gb of memory in our raid card (we have a 4gb ddr2 800 module in the all out pc too just for the raid card)! :P

Case - We got the latest silverstone tj-10 case. As for looks it may not be that great, but the construction quality is great, airflow and cable and routing are nice, but it is HUGE (a good thing). It will be the perfect enclosure!

CD/DVD - For this we picked to samsung sh-s203n drives (teh best performing dvd burners) and we also picked a $200 blu-ray lite on drive.

"Accessories"

These are the things that are not atcually inside the tower, or different accessories that are "not needed" such as speakers, CPU cooling, etc.

Mouse -
Logitech MX revolution. It is an overall nice-but-expensive gaming laser mouse. Coming really close to it is the logitech g5/g7.

Keyboard - Logitech g15- just a normal overall gaming keyboard.

Monitors - You are not gonna believe this - but TWO 30 inch XHD3000s for monitors. Those will do really well... they can even double as a TV! :P

Sound Card - HT omega claro plus - for $180. Creative used to be the best, but now with their driver issues and such, this looks like a great card to buy!

CPU Cooler - For the all out PC - we have TWO Coolit Freezone's (h2o cooling) , and for PC II, we have "just" one.

Operating systems - One Windows XP Professional 32bit, and one Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit, and a copy of 64 or 32 bit linux. We would do 64bit xp, but that has a ton of driver problems and such.

That's when i came up with the "Free Software Of The Day" ( originally called "Open Source of the day") Even though its not every day, it is good software tested by us.

Build a great budget PC for $280!

Here at 22tech, we love having solid, fast computers. But sometimes, that does not always happen. Sometimes you might need a basic computer, like for your kids or for your grandma that needs a new computer. This totals to only $280 w/ s&h, but does not include any peripherals or software, such as windows. (We recommend Ubuntu Linux).

CPU - AMD athlon 64 le-1600 $39.99
We picked amd for our budget pc, because it was really cheap on newegg, beating all of the intel's in that particular price range. Plus it is 45 watts and 1mb cache . Nice for a cheap proc. Oh, and did I mention you get a free t-shirt :P!

Motherboard - ECS 690G motherboard $49.99-$20MIR =$29.99
This motherboard was a cheap motherboard featuring the 690g chipset, so we figured we might as well go for this, even if it does mean having to buy an ecs mobo :-( .

Power Supply - Thermaltake W00070RUC 430W $39.99-10
What? You thought we were going to skimp on the power and use the lowly 300W power included with the case? Heck no! We chose this PS to give adequate power to components, and it even gives a generous PCI Express 6 pin cable in case we ever want to upgrade. Solid!

Case - Any cheap rosewill 29.99 case on newegg will do the job perfectly on a budget.

RAM - ADADA 2gb ddr2 800 $34 after rebate
Thats right folks, 2gb of memory in a sub-$300 computer! This RAM is rated @ ddr2 800 and will do the job perfectly , and may be a bit much on a budget. But this will come in handy , especially if you are planning to put Vista on this.

HD - Maxtor DiamondMax 21 250gb hard drive
250gb in a $250 pc! That is definetly not bad. This is the cheapest hard drive on newegg with 250gb, and the ratings are still very good. (Although you can never trust newegg ratings :P).

CD/DVD drive - Lite-on black sata dvdrom drive
For this budget pc, we could have easily gotten a dvd burner, but there is no point, since nobody with a cheap pc will burn dvds. Plus, this dvdrom is also sata!!!

Well.. that just about concludes our budget pc, which comes to $280 (inlucding shipping & rebates). Even though it is a pc on a budget, it is pretty powerful. It has a 2.3ghz athlon proc (which probably could be overclocked to 2.5 or 2.6ghz), comes with 2gb of ddr2 800 memory, and has a spacious 250gb hard drive! We hoped you liked our budget pc, and please post comments about what you liked/disliked. (I forsee people killing us for using ecs)

22tech recently found something extremely interesting we wanted to share with all of you recently. Apparently, a geocities site claims that they have a preview of the specs of a so-called 10800gtx, which will come out in The 3rd quarter of 2011, and it will play crysis @ 165fps with all of the eye candy on. Yea right. The specs of the supposed video card is on the right, but the photoshopper made one mistake - some of the edges are rounded, but some are not .. the fake picture is credited to SatchBoy of the maximumpc forums. Nice catch! But of course, it was a nice joke
LOL .. we can start a funny pc thing of the day .. ... but first we need to catch up on open source software of the day. You can talk about the article on the forum here.

We recently found this new great hosting site that you can use to host your webpages!! The site is called 110mb.com. It is totally free (but mysql costs $5 i think if you want that), stable, and there is virtually no offline time! On top of that, it offers 300gb of space, and 3000 gigabyte bandwith, although each file is limited to 10mb. There is also a great support forum in case you need help with anything, and if you get 350 posts on there, 110mb will give you FREE mysql! That is really amazing for such a cheap host. The NEW 9600gt :D.

Sorry, we are really late on this, but nvidia's new 9600gt just came out!! :D. It is a card that is priced around MSRP $180. It most benchmarks , it is a little bit behind the 8800gt, and performs on par with a 3870! Now Nvidia finally has a competitor to amd's 3850 and 70! And the future 9xxx seiries look promising :D. So far the only OC'ed 9600gt is evga's 9600gt, which ups it from 650Mhz to 675Mhz, but doesn't budge the memory clock. If I bought my pc now, then I would have an 9600gt instead of a lowly 8600gts now :( .. :P lol.

I have had a lot of linux os' and I have used a TON of operating systems during my 2 yr use of linux. I started with SuSE, Fedora, and a couple others, and eventually I setteled down with Ubuntu. (Ever since 6.06). I was browsing distros, and I found linux mint. Linux Mint is an OS based on ubuntu, but it has a lot of other features. It has a better theme, and it looks great, and it has a lot of applications to make using linux easier. The latest version is Linux Mint Darnya, and is based on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy. Try it out!

Everybody is talking about the new intel cpu's and how they have been killing amd, and how nvidia is the king of all video cards. Well, today we are going to focus on what AMD has done right..

1. AMD Phenom 9600 Black edition - ($224.99 @ newegg)
The AMD phenom 9600 black edition is essentially the same thing as a phenom 9600, but it comes with an unlocked multiplier (all black editions do), so you can overclock this baby really far, almost anybody who has tried overclocking this has gotten at least 3GHz from its stock of 2.4GHz. That is great for AMD, because it gives them a competitor to intel's q6600 quad and it is still cheaper by $50. This is a great cpu for the money, especially if you are upgrading from an old AMD and you want to upgrade your proc without buying a new motherboard or system

2. AMD 3850/3870
These are two solid videocards, you can find the 3850 for $160 after a $10 rebate at newegg, and the 3870 for $220. The 3850 basically has no competition, except for a slightly lower priced nvidia 8600gts, but it can school the 8600gts when it comes to games, except for ones that play stronger on nvidia systems

3. AMD 3870x2
It is basically 2 3870's in one, and it costs about $450, but it performs on par with the GTX and the 8800ULTRA at times! It also sometimes OUTperforms the ultra. AMD is back in the high end videocards range! For just 450, this is a steal!

Yet another open source of the day is on its way, and this time we chose Acidrip! Acidrip is a dvd burner (linux only) that will take a dvd and put it in an avi format. It has a lot of different options, you can set the file size, the number of files you want it to create, you can choose a specific title to rip, etc. It is a great program that I use for ripping all of my dvd's!

Convert any dvd/video file into another video file using free tools!

In today's howto, I will show you how to conver any dvd or video file into another video file (or dvd9 to dvd5) for absolutely FREE using free tools. Here are the tools we will be using

1. DVDFab HD decrypter (it may look a bit pricey, but after the trial expires it can still do the things we need it to do)
2. Handbrake, the utility for ripping dvd's
3. SUPER(C) , a program that lets you convert video formats to any other video format.

1 - How to rip your dvd's.
1a. Insert your dvd
1b. Open dvdfab, go into main movie and select the movie, and let it rip the dvd to your hard drive
1c. Open Handbrake, and browse to the video_ts dir of where dvdfab saved your dvd
1d. Configure your settings (Remember to click the show presets button)
1e. Let handbrake rip the dvd to your hard drive .. wait .. on an intel core 2 duo e4300 @ 2.25ghz cpu it took about 30-45min.
1f. Enjoy your new dvd! If you want it on your ipod, then just drag the mp4 into iTunes and enjoy! ;)

2. Use Super (C) to convert any video file into any other video file you want! This also applies to audio files, so relax and enjoy!

These programs will do better than any commercial app you can find! Handbrake works in linux, dvdfab runs easily uner wine, and SUPER(C) .. i dont know, I only know that all of these also work in vista.

Welcome to yet another open source of the day. This time the lucky winner is WINE . (Standing for Wine Is Not an Emulator). Wine is an emulator that enables SOME windows-designed products to work with linux, such as winrar, finale notepad 2008, etc.
It is not hardware emulation, so it does not slow down old computers as much as much as using a VM like vmware. Wine can not play all windows apps, you can check out the wine app database to see if you app works in wine. The operating systems it supports are linux and mac.

Welcome to Songbird! Songbird is a media-managing app(like itunes) but it is open source and free!! It works with ipods (EXCEPT iPod Touch and iPhone) , and it is built around firefox, one of the best web browsers you can find! It is still not a completely ready project yet (in version 0.4 and getting updated). I love this application, and I use it in linux to put songs on my iPod Video 5G (even though it does not support uploading movies ). But it is a great tool, especially for linux! Try it! Good luck!

Make the perfect gaming pc

Here at 22tech, we love the idea of making your own pc's. Why? Because they provide a great amount of customization for a REALLY cheap price! But how can you get the perfect best gaming setup?? Here is our parts list for a $900 beauty, and all parts are from Newegg!

1. CPU - Obviously, you need a core 2 duo, but which one? You can get the pentium dual cores that OC very easily, you can get the e4xxx series, or you can get the more expensive e6xxx series. For our purposes, we picked up a e6, it is the lowest e6xxx series with 4mb of cache. It is not that overclockable, but you could easily get it to 3-3.5 GHz.
2. Motherboard - For the motherboard you really need a p35 chipset, it is a midrange, not too expensive board, but it is reliable, fast, and overclocks well. It doesn't support SLI, but you really do not need sli for midrange, right? But if you REALLY wanted sli, you could go a little bit more for a 680i chipset, but that does not support penryn quads :(. For our p35 board , we chose the ABIT ip35-e.

3. RAM - 4 gigs in $800!! No way!! But yes way! This awesome set of OCZ 4gb ddr2 800 will do you well, and it's only $66 after rebates!!!

4. Video Card - This is a no-brainer, the evga 8800gt is the best budget-midrange vidcard!

If you want something a little bit cheaper than that, you could go with an 8800gts . ($220 before $200 after rebate) or a HD3870. ($240) If you want something ULTRA cheap you could go with a HD3850, which will also give reasonable performance.

5. Case and Power Supply - We chose the Antec Sonata III because of the great PSU included with it and a solid, cheap case. (PSU is Earthwatts 500W). And to add to the value, it is only $90 after MIR!!! (Same as the original earthwatts)

6. CD/DVD drive - Who could forget the cd/dvd drive? We chose the SH-S203N. The predecessor of it was the MPC best of the best award, and it is CHEAP! For maximum performance, we chose two of them, which would be about $60.

7. OS - Not included! All you need to do is borrow an XP cd from a friend, then deactivate xp on your current machine, then install XP on your new PC! If you do not want to do that, then pick up winxp home (IMO you do not need pro). It is about $90 on newegg, you can get pro for $70 (upgrade) if you are an academic student.

PortableApps is a suite (like U3) that runs off of your thumbdrive/USB Mass storage device, but it is completely FREE! I use this all the time with my Flash Voyager 4gb and it works like a charm. There are a lot of apps supporting it and you can add new ones easily (by going to program files directory and copying folders to ?:/PortableApps.)

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 Review

I myself am a big flight simulator fan, and before i get the new fsx, i have to write a review of Flight Simulator 2004.'

First of all, i have to say this is a great GAME. Any real pilot that says "o this is way easier than fling a real plane" i advise you, this is just a game. But the good thing is, un like fsx, this game can run on any not-so-fast computer on at least low settings. Over all the years of Microsoft's flight simulator (discluding x ) i'de have to say this is the best one yet. You can fly all different kinds of planes, any where in the world. You can also customize everything, so it works best for your system. At first, when you get this game you say " so all i do is fly the plane, huh...." But after a week or two you get to know all the cool different features, places, and controls. And with this games new Air Traffic Control window, talking to atc is a breeze. But this game is not the best for online play. ( for the best online play get fsx). My only dislike is the game gets boring after a while.

Overall i would rate this game a 8 on a 1-10 scale.

Virtual Machines!!

All of you hardcore users will know what a Virtual Machine is, if you don't know, it is a program that can let you run operating systems inside your operating system virtually (hardware emulation). The main Virtual Machine software is Vmware, and vmware player, etc. But today we are going to focus on VirtualBox, my favorite Virtual Machine software, and it is probably also the easiest to use!

In this post, I will show you where to get VirtualBox, and I will do a step-by-step tutorial using Vista. (In a linux envirornment).

1st of all, to download VirtualBox, go here.
Ubuntu users can download from there, and also do "sudo apt-get install VirtualBox"
Now load VBox. You should get this -

Now, click the button that says "New" and you should get this (click to enlarge) -

Just hit next and select the name of your vm (can be anything) and select your operating system you want to emulate. Then hit next and select the amnt of RAM you want to dedicate to a VM. This is your descision, it all depends how much RAM you have and how much you can sacrifice. Of course, for Vista, we do not recommend anything less than 1gb, but for some ppl that is ALL of their RAM!! After that click "New" on the hard disk page, I strongly recommend Dynamically Expanding Image, and from then on it should be easy, and now your screen should look like this-

But we are STILL not done yet. Click on CD/DVDROM, and choose your cd/dvd drive (or an iso file). You can also setup audio and other things (like networking, but should be automatic).

Launch the ball partially up the chute and allow it to fall to
the first yellow arch light. There are six yellow arch lights
in the chute that are worth a varying amount of points.

Everybody knows a external storage device, such as a USB drive or an mp3 player, is a great way to transfer data over to another place, and can be used for backups. But what about the people that are linux fans and don't want to use windows? There must be some way to put linux on your thumbdrive and boot from it right? Well, there is, but the problem with that is that not all computers can boot from a USB drive. Pendrivelinux solves this problem, it lets you run linux from within Windows using a Virtualization program called Qemu. The instructions are very easy, and it is a great way to show off linux to all of your friends :). You can go to thie site right here. Here is a picture -

SimplyMepis 7 review- The newest verson of linux

SimplyMepis 7.0 preview

I recently just downloaded the most recent image for the new SimplyMepis 7.0 Linux. SimplyMepis is a linux deriative based on Debian.

You can download the simplymepis image from here. (32bit)

This was tested on a VirtualBox virtualization software (will post on it later ), Intel Core 2 Duo Cpu @ 2.25 GHz, 2gb of RAM, 8600gts videocard. (Although Vbox has no 3d support).

On booting up the system, this is what you get -

The main desktop is right next to it. (double click to make larger).
Everything worked perfectly for me on first boot, internet and everything (did not test audio). So far, this distro looks good, and has a nice look to it (kde).
